About University of San Diego

The University of San Diego is a Roman Catholic University in San Diego, which is the 9th largest city in USA, having a population of nearly 1 300 000 inhabitants, estimated during the 2008 census, as well as the largest city of Southern Border. The city was named after Saint Didacus, and its biggest industries are tourism, manufacturing and military. According to Money Magazine (2006), San Diego is the 5th best place to live in America, and according to Forbes Magazine, the city is also the 5th wealthiest one in USA.


USD was chartered in 1949, and it opened its doors for the first time, in 1952, to its first class of students, under the name of San Diego College for Women. In September, 1954, the San Diego College for Men and School of Law were opened, occupying the Bogue Hall on University High School’s site, which later became University of San Diego High School. The University of San Diego was officially born in 1972, and since then, it quickly grew into the renowned educational institution known today.


The athletic teams from USD are known as the San Diego Toreros, who compete in the West Coast Conference, in the Division I level of the NCAA, being best known for their achievements in basketball. The football team competes in the Division I-AA, Pioneer Football League, while the women’s softball team competes in the Pacific Coast Softball Conference. In 2007, quarterback Josh Johnson managed to throw 43 touchdowns passes and 1 interception, setting a school record.


The list of notable USD alumni contains names such as Steve Altman - President, Qualcomm, Inc., Leonard Armato - CEO and Commissioner for the Association of Volleyball Professionals, Alison Cox - Medalist in the Olympics-Women’s Rowing, Eddie Still - New York State Attorney, Josh Johnson - Quarterback Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Jim Parsons - Actor, CBS's ‘’Big Bang Theory’’, as well as many other great people who have made themselves notable in various fields, after graduation.
